At some point, he is going to paint the tub biscuit to match the toilet and the sink. The only thing besides the tub that we are keeping is the light fixtures, cuz I like them.
Here's the current state of the bathroom... the paint color looks bright orange in this picture, but it's really more of a pumpkin color. We'll see how it ends up looking once it's all put together... if it's no good, it can always be re-painted. The tile is called Burgundy Grey (Burgundy being the name of the tile, Grey being the color.) We also have some really cool accent tile picked out, that's supposed to come in tomorrow. At some point, he is going to paint the tub biscuit to match the toilet and the sink. The only thing besides the tub that we are keeping is the light fixtures, cuz I like them. In other news, the flooring guys are supposed to start putting the new kitchen floor in on Monday, and then we have to be out of the house for 3 to 4 days while they sand everything down and re-stain and poly it. Kevin and I have a reservation at Homewood Suites, and Sasha has a reservation at Hotel Ursula and Richard. She can't wait for her stay-cation... three different beds and all the squirrel chasing she can handle! It's a puppy paradise!

Today our bathroom officially went from this: To this: I guess there's no turning back now! Sasha was so good... I was afraid she would freak out with someone in the house crashing around, but she seemed perfectly fine when I got home. I had given the contractor a ziplock bag of treats, and he must have tossed it on the floor because it was mostly empty with a big hole torn in it when I got home. In other news, we have a new light in the hallway on the main floor. The old light, affectionately known as "the boob light" went to a nice lady named Beth on Freecycle who needed a fixture for her living room. I scored the new light on HomeDepot.com for only $38 with free shipping! I was going to buy another one for the upstairs hall, but I procrastinated enough that they are now out of stock, so I had to buy the second one at full price from another store :-(
Other updates -- the drywall in the basement is now fixed and the guest room, hallway and laundry room are freshly painted. The guest room and hallway actually got painted twice because the painter had a little senior moment and used the laundry room paint the first time. As much as I'm sure our guests would appreciate a pink bedroom, it's now the proper "Captivating Cream" and the laundry room is a fresh and pretty "Sugar Berry". Next, the carpet guy has to come and lay down the new pad and put the carpet back down. We also have someone coming out tomorrow to re-frame the wall we took down in the kitchen. Once that's done, we can schedule the flooring folks to come in and put the new floor down! So, before the kitchen flooded (and the dishwasher broke a week later), we had set in motion plans to re-do the upstairs hall bathroom. The current bathroom is seriously stuck in the 70s... mustard colored tile and toilet, linen wallpaper that's very badly done, a peculiar blue and white tile on the floor, 40 year-old brass faucets that look about 80 years old... but the kicker is the cabinet above the shower. Yes, there's a cabinet above the shower, which means that Kevin can't even stand up in there, and the water from the shower head hits me in the chest.
So, it all needs to be ripped out and re-done. We went and talked to Joy from Kitchens by Design (recommended to us by a friend) and chose alder cabinets in the color sage. We then took the sample cabinet door to Tops in Stone, and found an amazing remnant of granite called Golden Thunder. Kevin took a picture of the granite with his phone since they didn't have a sample for us to take with us. The colors are a little off in this picture, but we held the cabinet door up to it, and they look great together. We then took the door and the picture to the tile place and found two colors of tile in the same style... Burgundy Gray for the floor and Burgundy Cotto for the shower. The sink, toilet and tub are going to be biscuit. I need to take the sample tiles over to Tops in Stone to make sure they go with the granite okay, but I think they will. I think the white you see in the picture is really more of an ivory. So, here's my mood board for the bathroom... the contractor is going to start in mid-November so we hope it's done by Christmas! |
That 70's House
Our new (to us) house was built in 1973... and while the dark wood trim and hickory ceiling beams are part of what drew us to the house, it still needs to be brought into this decade. This blog will document our attempts to update the house, while still maintaining its old-school charm. Archives
